- (continued from previous page)operations of swapping and begging. The patron of the Coffey family, is one Tom Coffey, and the present head of the O'Brien family is Jem O'Brien known locally as Big Jem - an ex-British soldier and the Jack Johnson of the tribe.
Besides these travelling families others from outside counties visit us annually these are the Connors and Delaneys from Wexford, the Faulkners from Clare and about four years ago a company of the Mac Donogh's from Meath and Westmeath paid us a flying visit. Some of those who come from outside counties are tinsmiths and they do a busy trade selling saucepans, tin-can buckets and lamps made of tin.
Nearly all of these live in rudely constructed caravans drawn by old asses or mules. The women folk sell lace and some of them are fortune tellers.
Those outsiders generally come before the Ballyheigue "pattern" which is held on the 8th of September. T
