  1. At the time of Daniel O'Connell there was a rent imposed on the Catholic people for the upkeep of the Protestant Clergy called the Tithes.
    Daniel O'Connell was in oppostion to this and all the people followed him as they were delighted to have a leader. Daniel O'Connell buried the Tithes on the Devil's Bit, which is marked by a little round hill on the Borrisnoe side of the Bit.
