Many heads were broken and loud words spoken
Ere the rival factions proceeded home
But the brethren departed right broken hearted
And left the town to the hordes of Rome.
There was a sequel to this sad disorder
Men were arrested and sent to jail,
At Armagh Assizes their case was pleaded
Some were sentenced some released on bail
To stop the slaughter for ever after,
The town’s proclaimed on the “twelfth day”
And the R.I.C. men from Glen to Reelin
    In Dunkineely hold unchallenged sway
    Anon.
Since this memorable day in local history there has been no disturbance in the district. The Orangemen still celebrate to crossing of the Boyne in a field convenient to their lodge but they never attempt to “march” through the village. Ever after the riot the village was proclaimed and I remember police being drafted in from the neighbouring towns to make sure that there would be no repetition of the ’81 occurrence.
