  1. Wakes were held in the district since “time out of memory”. There is very little change in the customs at wakes in this locality. The corpse is waked two nights except in rare instances where the corpse is left one night in the church. In catholic homes where a person is in imminent danger of death prayers are recited for the departing soul and usually neighbours “sit up” in turn if it be a protracted period. When the soul is about to depart holy water is plentifully sprinkled and the rosary recited by all present. Immediately the soul departs preparations are made for the wake. The neighbours begin and make the house as presentable as possible. A little table covered with a white cloth is placed near the deathbed on it are placed a crucifix – and two brass candlesticks (the pride of every housewife) also a plate of snuff is left on the table for the use of anyone who likes a pinch.
