My grandfather told me that when he was a young boy, they used to play different tricks. Here is one of them.
First he scooped out a turnip in the shape of a face, and then cut two holes for the eyes and one for the nose and a split for the mouth. At night he put it out and put a lighted candle inside it and a white sheet round it. It often frightened people going that way.
Here is another trick they played.
First he got two potatoes and got two sticks for the hands and two for the legs. Then he put two holes for the eyes and one for the nose and a split for the mouth. Then he had little toy men to play with.
