  1. This depended a good deal on the circumstances of the people concerned. Seven years was generally the age at which children got boots in families of fair circumstances. The children of the poorer families often went barefooted until boots became necessary for the performance of some kind of work.
    Women went barefooted a good deal more than men, and would often beseen going to Mass or market carrying their boots to within a short distance of their destination.
    Washing the feet was very much observed and it was considered unlucky to leave the water inside during the night. It was customary to drop a coal in the water used for washing feet. This water was not destroyed when any occupant of the house was out, lest the fairies should come and take him.
