- We have a churn at home. It is one foot and a half high, and it holds seven gallons. The churn we have at home is a machine churn. There are many other different kinds of churns, such as, turn over churns, and common churns.The part of the churn are, the dash and the handle. The woman of the house that generally does the churning. The whole family help at the churning, and if a person comes in to the house while churning they have to give the handle a few twists or if they don't it is believed that they can take the butter.It takes about twenty minutes to churn, and it takes longer to churn in Winter than in Summer. Churning is done about twice a week in Summer as the milk is more plentiful than in Winter. The people put salt in the cream when churning because it is 'pisreóga'.
