- My churn is four and a half feet tall and is one and half feet wide at the top and one foot at the bottom. It is about forty years old. The butter is made twice a week in Summer and once a week in Winter it takes longer. It is a dash churn and it is pulled up and down. When the butter is churned it gathers on the top. Hot water is put in, in Winter to help to sour the milk. The butter is lifted out with a strainer all the milk is washed out of it and then it is salted. Butter milk is used for wetting bread and is given to pigs. If anybody comes in while churning is in progress some people would not let them take a coal for their pipe or any tool least they should take the butter.
