- Shrove is the time appointed by the church for the celebration of marriages. It begins on St. Stephen's Day and ends on Shrove Tuesday. Until quite recently, Shrove was the eason of the year when local marriages took place. Now they occur at all periods, except Lent, Advent, and Harvest. It is a belief among some people that harvest marriages are unlucky. It is also considered unlucky to marry either on Mondays or Fridays.
