- A ladhar of meal, flour, bran etc. A ladhar is the amount taken with the open hand. A dorm of meal is often given to a young calf or to chickens. A dorm is the amount taken in the closed fist. A mám of oats, meal, pollard flour etc as above. A mám is the amount taken with both hands together.In measuring turf the following terms are always used. 'Bring in a sgíth of turf'. A sgíth is a wicker-basket, hollow & having sides. 'Bring in a gabháil og turf' - the amount taken between arms away from body.A cis of turf would be the amount required to fill a very large basket. Such baskets are out of use in this district now-a-days.
Six cis of turf is the amount to make a big horse-load. Thirty cis make a quarter of turf.
A quarter of turf is twenty feet long, eight feet wide and three feet high. (20'x8'x3').
Five cis of turf is the usual horse-load.
