“During the 'Tithe War'...”
During the ‘ tithe war ‘ a cow the property of Father Hickey, then Parish Priest of Doon was seized for the non-payment of tithes and was “ put up for auction “ at The Ford of Bilboa, a place about two miles on the Limerick side of Doon. A fierce fight ensued, Coote the bailiff who made the seizure being severly wounded
Here are a few lines - the effort of a local rann maker - descibing the incident -
“ By Jove “ says Coote “ I had no right
To charge the Priest for any tithe
Or cart his cow at Bilboa’s Height
Which caused the armies all to fight “.
