- Some years ago the walls of old houses were made of mud. Straw was mixed through the mud, and then a layer of mud is built and left out to dry. Another is placed on that and so on until the wall was built. Then the men would go out to gather poles in order to make a roof. Then straw was placed on them and things called scalips were placed through it, in order to keep it tight. Some of those old houses are still to be seen.
