    would give him a site for a monastery. Not alone did he give him a site but he helped him to build it of yew trees = Plain of the Yew trees Magh-na-nEo = Mayo.
    The Abbey was destroyed by lightning in 778, burned by the Danes in 818 in 908 and again in 1169 and plundered in 1204 by William de Burgo.
    The Danes were bad enough, were not as bad as the Norsemen who frequently sacked our monasteries. Turgesius 831 is specially mentioned as the terrible Dane who destroyed by fire in contempt of God and of His saints the temple of the church of Mayo which was roofed with lead.
