- There are many old roads in this district. There is one which begins at Thomas Kelly's meadow, and continues up by the back of our own house as far as James Flanagan's hill. It was made in the year eighteen forty seven. James Flanagan lives in the townland of Lisgorman and Thomas Kelly lives in Sox.
Another one I have heard of begins in Edward Feeney's land and it runs through Shasken as far as Matthew Killkennys. Edward Feeney lives in the townland of Gortnacarcogue. It was made as relief work during the Famine period of eighteen forty six and eighteen forty seven.
These roads are not used now for heavy traffic such as carting but sometimes they are used as paths. All the old roads are called after the name of the townland in which they are situated.
Before bridges were made in this district most of the rivers were crossed by means of big stepping stones and footsticks in shallow places. Many rivers were also crossed by means of fords. There was a ford at Duncan's house, which is situated in the townland of Dark Valley.
There are no heaps of stones or monuments to the dead along any of the road in this(continues on next page)- Collector
