    scholar. He went to America and became Lord Mayor of Iowa. Master McGlade taught in Mr. Michael's house. He afterwards taught in the school I now attend, Cloonmorris National School. Master McGlynn taught in the hedge-school in Patrick McGlynn's field in Cloonart.
    The Master McGlade mentioned became an inspector of National Schools and died within the past two years. Master Makim and Miss Parks taught in the Protestant school in Cloonageeher. A night school conducted in the lower end of Bornacoola parish and a Master Reynolds taught there. Very few of those teachers were strangers.
    The teachers were paid for the instruction they have by the pupils bringing two or three sods of turf each day, and giving two pence or three pence per month. Some children brought a three-legged stool or a block of wood for a seat, and then those seats were kept especially for the bringer. Those who did not bring their own seats had to sit on stones.
    English reading, writing, arithmetic and a small quantity of geography were the only subjects taught in the hedge-schools. Irish was not spoken in the hedge-schools by either master or pupils. The name of the English books was "Reading-made-easy". The children used to write on
