- Potatoes are grown on my father's land. About half-an-acre was sown last year, but the amount usually varies from year to year. My father and elder brother prepares the ground. Sometimes the ground is manured with seaweed or farmyard manure before being turned up. Potatoes are sown in drills and ridges, but the latter usually yield a drier potato especially during a wet season. Drills are made by the plough. First, the ground is ploughed, harrowed and rolled until the clay is fine and mellow, then the drills are open the manure is drawn out and spread in the hollows between the drills, the seed potatoes - sgiolláin - are spread and then(continues on next page)
