    About twenty years ago there were very few slated houses in this district. The majority was thatched. This thatching was done by some of the country men.
    The roof was covered with either straw, rushes, or keeb from the bog. The thatcher did the work in strips from the ridge of the house to the eaves - which he called "strakes" and the material used was kept in place by pointed rods called "scollops". A good thatcher was very well respected and got the best of entertainment in the various houses in which he worked.
    Nearly every district had a cooper or two, who made barrels, churns, and washing tubs. At the present time there is one in Cashel quite close to us. The churn was carefully made out of well seasoned oak and surrounded by six light iron hoops which were rivetted at the side. The pieces of wood were called staves. The barrels were made much the
