- In olden times the people ate three meals a day. - breakfast, dinner and supper. The started work early in the morning -generally about eight but in the busy season they began much earlier. It was usual to do a couple of hours work before breakfast which consisted of porridge made from Indian meal or oatmeal.
About two o'clock they had their dinner. Potatoes, buttermilk and salt was the chief fare at this meal. A great treat was Maughcrow herrings, which were sold at the rate of thirty for three pence. They were roasted on the tongs or griddle before the fire. When cooked boiling water was poured over the,. This was thrown away because it was too salty. More boiling water was poured on, the hering was broken up in this and it was eaten with the potatoes.
