- In Ireland most marriages are contracted between the 6th of January and Shrove Tuesday. There are many different customs observed in different [?] of the country in preparing for a marriage [?]. In the Rural Areas the system known as match-making still prevails. The parties to married very often never see each other until everything is arranged by the "matchmakers". The usual method of procee [?] is as follows. The father of the bride has his eye on a certain farm for his daughter. He sends a neighbour or the local "matchmakers" to the owner, usually the Father or Mother of the Intended bridegroom.
