- This old ruins is situated in the centre of Loughbawn demesne on a beautiful green site. It is surrounded on three sides by water, and towards the land it is enclosed by a strong embankment, and deep trench.Portions of its strong walls, and underground cellars still remain, and according to tradition, and to judge from its style of and architecture it must have been built in or about the sixth century. This old building, according to local tradition was inhabited by monks who kept a famous school, and on account of its isolated position escaped the ravages of both the Danish, and Norman invasions.Having thus escaped(continues on next page)
