    I pray to God to be my guide. And ever and ever I give my soul to God forever.

    I pray to God to be my guide,
    Ane ever and ever I give my soul to God forever,
    There are four corners on this bed,
    There are four angels on them spread,
    One at my feet one at my head,
    And one at each side of my be bed,
    St Matthew, Mark, St Luke and John,
    God bless this bed that I lie on,
    And if I die before I wake,
    I pray to God my soul to take,
    Amen.
    When in bed they used to sit up and bless themselves six times, to keep themselves from taking nightmares. Then they used to lie down and say,
    Sacred Heart of Jesus crucified upon a cross,
    Let me lie down to rest,
    With their arms in the form of a cross they said.
    I must die, I do not know when nor how, nor where.
    But if I die in mortal sin.
    I am lost forever.
    Oh Jesus have mercy on me,
    In the morning they used to say
