An Old Belief.
There is an old belief that if a cinder fell out of the fire at night it is the sign of some stranger coming to the house that night. And if the people of the house don't want a stranger to come they spit on the cinder.
Another old belief is that if a frog comes into the house,it is a sign of bad luck coming.- Collector
