“There are many stories current regarding strange animals which have their dwelling in the lakes around the district, but many accounts are vague, and no one seems to have actually seen the creatures.”
(continued from previous page)that anyone who watches all night for three nights can see the animal come out to graze on the lake shore.
A similar tale is told about other lakes, the White Lakes in Curbane some distance away. A chain of lakes stretches from this district to the Shannon and I heard an old man, since dead, describe about a huge animal, which walked from one lake to another and roared like a bull from time to time.
From the number of references to these things it appears that at some time or other there must have been some unusual animal seen around these lakes, but it is hard to get anyone to give a proper account of it.
There was never a reference to money or valuables guarded by this strange animal, but not far from Cloonroughan lake there is a white stone on the mearing of a farm which bears the print of a horse-shoe deeply marked(continues on next page)- Informant
