  1. The local landlord in this district is Sir Hercules Langrishe Bart. They settled here three or four hundred years ago.
    There were on friendly terms always with their tenants and were among the first to give their lands for sale. They came into possession from James II of Ormond.
    In those days the tithes were another tax on the people. This was for the upkeep of the protestant Minister. A tenth of all agricultural produce was to go to him.
    The people resented this tax very much. After years of strife it was put to an end by the battle of Carrickshock.
