- Patrick Mitchell, aged 80 years of Tullylast Rathangan told me that in his youth people gathered rushes in the bog. These were peeled, a work which required a certain amount of skill and dexterity. The rushes were then dipped in melted fat, and allowed to cool. They were then re-dipped and the process was continued until they were considered sufficiently thick. There were special holders for these "dips". They resembled a candle stick and had a kind of clip which tightened in on the dip. The vessel in which the "fat" was melted was known as the "griosadh".
Sluts - Another kind of taper called "Sloats" or "Sluts" was made from two piece of calico, half an inch in width was rooled, bandage fashion. These.(continues on next page)- Collector
