  1. (continued from previous page)
We play a lot of tricks that night. We tie an apple from the ceiling and we be trying to catch it in our mouths. Whoever catches it can eat it. We get a tub of water and we put a nice red apple in it. We try and catch it in our mouths. Whoever gets it can eat it. A sixpence is often put in a tub of water and whoever catches it can keep it. We get three saucers and we put clay on one, water on another and a ring on the third. We put a cloth on a child's eyes and we lead him over to the table. If he leaves his hand on the ring it is a sign that he will be married first. If he leaves his hand on the water it is a sign that he will cross the sea first. If he leaves his hand on the clay it is a sign that he will die first. Some boys disguise themselves and they go around knocking at the doors. They often tie knockers on opposite sides of the road and when the people try to get out they are not able.
