- During the struggle for freedom in Ireland, a party of volunteers were ordered to march ten miles to take part in an ambush. Having finished the march the captain said "we should have gone the other direction, we have made a mistake. If any man thinks he cannot do it let him take three paces forward." They all stepped forward except one. The captain asked him his name "Murphy sir" he said, "Well Murphy, you are a credit to the volunteers. Out of the whole company you are the only one who can walk back." "Me walk back, I can't walk the three paces forward."
