Shops were not as plentiful in olden times as they are now. People often had to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and selling was not carried on after Mass. Eggs and butter are still given in exchange for goods. Money was not always given for goods. If a person did not pay for goods when he got them it would be said he got them on tick.
