- There is an old Church in Gurteenroe which was built during the Penal Times. People used to come from all parts of the country around it to hear mass in the Church. The Church was never attacked. All the people used not get room in the Church. Some of them used to pray around the Church One Sunday a man went up the hills to try was the priest coming. He saw the priest coming pursued by three men with horses in full speed. He thought that they were soldiers pursuing the priest, and he shouted at the priest that there were soldiers in pursuit of him. The priest got a fright, and he forced his horse across the river.
