  1. Long ago nearly every dwelling house was thatched around this district; nowadays slate is used except in a few places; thatched houses may be seen. Every farmer used to thatch his house once a year, and it was in the summer time he used to thatch it usually.
    About two or three weeks before the farmer was going to thatch his house, he cut a lot of rushes, and left them on the ground, in order that the sun would toughen them. Then he cut a lot of twigs also, and he left them under the sun to toughen too. When the twigs, and the rushes were well seasoned, he set about the task to (thath) the house.
    At first he took off the old thatch, then he got a bunch of rushes and fastened it tight to one corner of the roof. Then he got another bunch, and stuck it under the first bunch, and continued like this until the thatching was finished.
