- Another use which was made of the fat of cows, besides candle-making was the making of soap. When an animal was killed after being stall -fed for a month or so half of its fat was made into candles and half of it was made into soap. For many years this work has been discontinued. The fat of the cow was prepared in the same way to make soap as it was for candle-making. When it was melted they mixed washing soda, which had also been melted in a little water, with the fat. Then it was allowed to set and when it was quite hard it was cut into pieces for use. It had a very strong smell and it was excellent for washing clothes.
