People used to get goods on "tick" which means credit. Some people used to call it the "Kathleen Mavourneen" system, as it was, "sometimes for years, and sometimes for ever," before the goods were paid for.
Pedlars used to travel around the country selling, cloth, laces, brooches, and ballads. They also used to hold "cants" at fairs selling second-hand goods, such as, clothes boots and harness. Dealers used to go around, buying, rags, feathers and horse-hair. Huxters used also go around buying things and they would keep on arguing and bargaining until they would get the article as cheap as they could. They are very scarce now.
Long ago a bag coin was called a "nailer" because the merchants, when they got them used to nail them to the counter(continues on next page)
