After, when the boys got big enough to work she came out of the workhouse again. When the boys and girls earned enough they went to America and did very well afterwards.During the famine there also lived at Gortnagrough a family called Nylan. The father went to America and left his wife and children at home. The times were so bad that he had nothing to send home to his wife. This woman was very poor and lived in a small cottage. This woman used to be fed by the neighbours and in the end she felt to ashamed to be any more. One night as she was putting the children to bed she found she had nothing to eat for the morning.
