- (continued from previous page)The front of the chimney was always made of mortar & stones, never of clay and wattles.
Half doors were common in the district long ago and served to keep out the fowl and domestic animals and to keep in the young children. They are common at present in all thatched houses.
Very few of the old houses are now left as the majority of the householders have availed of the housing grants to improve their houses.
