The first qualified teacher that taught there was Mr. Dillon of Feenagh who afterwards taught in Milleen for years. This school was once only mud walls and thatched roof and its only consisted of a few seats and a blackboard.
At first in the National Schools every child had to pay 3s-6d, a quarter which was called tuition money, because the Government could not pay sufficient money to the teachers. As time went on the salaries of the teachers increased and the farmers had no need to pay them, and now education is free to everybody.
The old hedge school which was afterwards a National School existed until 1886 when this present school, Knockanebane was built.
