  1. There were many local heroes in the athletic section, and there are some at the present day.
    There was a man of the name of William Murphy of Liscarroll, County Cork ; and he threw a sledge-hammer from the public road, over the walls of the old castle of Liscarroll.
    Mr. Denis Horgan, Fermoyle, Banteer, was the world's champion for some time at putting the sixteen pound shot.
    A man of the name of Jim Galvin, was a very good hundred yards runner for some time.
    Mr. Jerry Guiney of Roskeen, Lombardstown, County Cork was a very good long distance runner ; and won several Marathon races of ten to fifteen miles ; and once ran from Naas to Dublin a distance of
