- About 50 or more years ago I knew a shop-keeper in Castletown-Roche named John Murphy. He was then about 70 or perhaps 75 years of age. His wife was called in her younger days "Norry the Crabs"
John was a poor scholar before he started shop-keeping. He also became manager or miller in R.W. Dawson's Thomas's mill in Casletownroche. He used to go about to the farmers' houses with his bundle of books under his arm, remain for weeks at a farm-house, and hold a night-school there.
He received board & lodging gratis, and charged the pupils who came a very small fee(continues on next page)- Collector
