  1. (continued from previous page)
To complete their terror, they heard the clank of chains, and believing it to be the foul fiend himself, coming to wreack vengeance on their curiosity, took to their heels, and abandoned the search. When after much persuasion, they returned for their implements in the broad light of day, they discovered Cadogan's mule grazing quietly near the spot. It was the chain on his leg that frightened them, but it was many days before they believed that, and besides they vowed that not for a king's ransom, would they set foot in the field again.
Nobody has renewed the search, but the hole made by our friends can be seen to the present day.
