He says, 'In the course of my dates, I met a man near Inchigeeela Co Cork.

This story was given to me some time ago by Mr. John Looney - 43 years - an employee of Cork County Council of Macroom Co. Cork.
He says "In the course of my duties I met a man near Inchigeela, Co. Cork. He asked me if I had ever seen a 'Clearachán's Pipe', and I answered in the negative. He shortly produced one. It had a tiny head and a long slender stem. I had never seen the likes and I asked him to tell me how he got it. He told me in all sincerity and the man in my opinion is perfectly normal specimen of a stolid mid Cork farmer. It appears tht his daughter placed some fresh sods of turf in the fire for 'kindling'. This is banked up in the hearth and on the following morning a few blows with the mouth or with the bellows is sufficient to start the fire. When the daughter came to the kitchen on the following morning she found the pipe on the hearthstone: this gave rise to the story that the 'Clearachán' had placed it there during the night. I examined the pipe and noticing some sort of a design on the head I cleaned it, and examining it more closely discovered what I think was the head of Daniel O'Connell engraved on it. These pipes were made I believe at the time when the Liberator obtained Catholic Emancipation
