“One day a priest in Charleville met Bill Lenane who was after a heavy batter”
One day a priest in Charleville met Bill Lenane who was after a heavy batter. The priest was angry and reproached him for his foolishness. “Bill you’re a disgrace and you ought to be ashamed of yourself” said the priest. “Wisha , what am I doing, Father, only takin’ an old pint of porter” said Bill. “Ah, Bill, you’ll be sorry yet. You’d go to the gates of hell for liquor”. “Begor, I would Father”, replied Bill, “and if it was after closing time, I’d slip round to the back and hand in the jug”Some nine years ago, two missioners came to Charleville. During the mission, the confessionals were filled daily by penitents. Among the number one day was Bill, who took position near Fr. M’s box. He thought that the Holy Father was a very nice man, and that he might get a “cheap lift”. Bill got a very severe examination in the confessional much to his surprise. On coming up the street afterwards, he was hailed by some of the boys, who asked him if he had been with the Missioners. “Well then”, said Bill, “I’m just after comin’ out and fair the same little man was no “so-ho”. “Who did you go to Bill? queried one of the group who knew that something good was coming. “Oh” said Bill, “I went to Fr. M., “and what kind was he”, said another. “Well now, then”, said he “do you know what – for a small little man like him whose so short in the parish, t’would surprise you what he knew and he was mighty inquisitive.”Patrick Curtin
