1. Old Houses

   There are still a number of old houses in this country in which farmer's and labourers live. Some of these houses are very old, and were built in a very primitive styles, as stone and mortar were scarce, and could not be got in some districts.

   Farmer's had to build the houses of yellow clay commonly known as mud. This clay was dug from underneath the subsoil, and when made into mortar it was then mixed with cut straw to make it hold well together. The chimney was built with hay and mud mixed, and it was held also by a frame of laths or sticks to keep all this work firm. The rooms of these old houses were of large dimensions, in the farmer's houses, but the kitchen was also used as a
