  1. There are many ruins round Askeaton. These include the Old Desmond Castle and the Franciscan Abbey. The castle is situated on a little island on the bank of the River Deel. They say the castle was built in the year 1199 AD. The English tried to take the castle but they failed. They then went down and burned the Franciscan Abbey.
