- (continued from previous page)In former times Ballyculhane castle was the home of the O'Briens who intermarried with the Purcells. Many attacks were made on the castle but all were beaten off. In the year 1694 Cromwell's troops marched from Adare to the castle and attacked it. The siege lasted for a long period. Until at last the O'Briens surrendered from want of food and ammunition, but before they surrendered, they hid their gold and valuables in some part of the castle. Numerous searches were made for the hidden treasure, but all failed to locate the exact position. A couple of years ago a young man who dreamt of the treasure, dug in the inside of the castle and after some heavy work he unearthed a medal, bearing on it the arms of the O'Briens.26 years Jack Slattery.Peggy Ryan, Old Kildimo.
