"A tough root," or a "Hard Nut," or a "Hard Nail" - It's not easy to get the better of him.
"As tough as a wheel string." Could be worn out.
"As dead as a door nail" - gone beyond any chance of recovery
"He's dancing days are done" - He's no longer capable of enjoying himself.
"A dumb priest never gets a parish." - If you don't do the best you can for yourself nobody will assist you.
"Don't take a slate of the house." - Said to a person who refuses to purchase something when he enters a shop. Said to those who refuse to take a drink when offered to them in a public house.
"There's a slate of there" or "A screw loose" eccentricity or madness
"I didn't see you with a dog's age" - It's so long since I saw you that I scarcely recognize you.
"your dial would stop a clock." Your face is so objectionable that nobody wants to look at it.
"Your face would turn milk" - You're so cross looking that if you looked at new milk 'twould turn sour.
