  1. 1) Long ago people stayed up until twelve or one o'clock in the night to welcome in the New Year and bands went out at midnight to play the old year out and the new year in.

    2) In "gentlemen's" places they had canons in the roofs of the houses and they use to shoot out the old year.
    Sir Charles Barrington had canons in his castle in Glenstal.
