- All the houses long ago were thattched. The thatch was got from the rushes. All the old houses had a bed in the kitchen, and it was called a "settle-bed". It was placed at the side wall by the fire. Sometimes the fire was placed at the gable end and sometimes at the middle wall. The chimney was made of mortar and it was sometimes made of wattles and clay. The floors were made of mud and clay.
