- The remains of an old fort can still be seen near Michael Fitzpatrick's of Ballyvaskin.
It was built by the Fir Bolgs about 1500 B.C.
The Tuatha De Danaans drove them into all these wild places as they wanted to take away their lands.
All traces of the buildings which this fort enclosed, and which consisted mainly of flimsy structures of wattles plastered over with mud, have long since disappeared.
The subterranean passage still remains.
This passage was constructed underground within the inner ring of the fort several feet deep in the form of a crescent or a horse shoe. Access was gained by several stone steps at both ends. It was used as a place of refuge in inclement weather or in case of attack by the hostile tribes.
