- Today - March 1st is Shrove Tuesday. The grown ups call it Shrove but the children call it Pancake day. It is a very old custom to make pancakes and is still carried out especially in Ireland and England. On the Wednesday after that the Catholice people receive ashes from the priest as he puts the ashes on the brow he says these words in Latin "Remember man thou art but dust and into dust thou Shalt return" On the morning of Shrove Tuesday the children go to school very early and write on the board "Please sister be faithful and kind and dont let the pancakes go out of your mind for when you(continues on next page)
