In the same district of Rathlogan there lives four families of Monaghans. These are distinguished by their parents names as "Jack's Johnnie" "Tommy's Paddy" "Jame's Jenny" etc. One of the families is no way related to the other three and it is said that an ancestor, who was a member of the "Whiteboys", on one occasion, threw a child back into a burning house, which the Whiteboys had set on fire. At any rate, this was ever a blot on their name even in my own schooldays. The members of this family have falled on evil days in recent years.
The people in this district used to drive hay and straw to the market in Dundalk. They used to tie the hay or straw in bundles called "Botans". There was a certain method of tying the bundle. I often saw it done. It was rolled in the arms and a wisp from the bundle was twisted from both ends towards the centre, and no rope was used. The "Botan" kept its shape and the hay or straw was easily handled. There was no such thing as a haypress in those days.
