Preparation of the ground
Before the farmer plants the potatoes he skins the soil - that means he just takes the top of it with a plough. Potatoes are always planted in the ground that corn was in the year before. Drills are made at the second ploughing. Ridges are seldom made in this part of the country, the work can be done easier when the potatoes are in drills.When they are in drills they have to be dug out with a spade or "laighe". The farmer goes out in the spring and turns the potatoes and picks out those most suitable for seed.
